Dear Director / Score adjustment
Last post by Vanda Cassim - 27 February, 2024, 06:27 PM
At our club recently, I was asked if an incorrect score that had been entered into Bridgemate could be changed after the session had been settled and results posted to Pianola.
The circumstances apparently were that the player who incorrectly entered the result but didn't check until after Bridgemate moved to the next board, called for the Director. She was told the change could be made at the end of the day, but forgot to change it. The player was then advised that it was too late. Two boards were incorrectly entered that day and it wasn't a normal session - it was part of a 4-week event based on points for the weekly winner so these errors affected a number of people. My understanding is that scores can be changed up to 24 hours later, but is this a decision made by individual clubs? Or is there a standard procedure?

Bridge online discussion / Directors who can run sessions...
Last post by Nick Hughes - 26 February, 2024, 03:23 PM
Online bridge is here to stay, particularly for night sessions at some regional clubs.
From the ABDA's point of view, it would be good to have a list of director-members who know enough to set up and run a regular duplicate session on one of the platforms.

We will poll our members to see how many are competent and interested. Each State Association keeps a database of accredited directors. We will see if we can have some columns added to that data, reflecting software skills. (Such as able to run Swiss Teams in Compscore / BBO)

General Discussion / Fairest movement for a standar...
Last post by hirowla - 24 February, 2024, 01:28 PM
Just after an opinion about which of these two movements is "fairest" for a standard club session of 11 tables:
  • 9 rounds x3 board Web Mitchell
  • 11 rounds x 3 board Standard Mitchell, but intentionally not playing the last round
I used to run 33 boards but they don't want to do that any more. So I see myself coming down to these choices.

Any opinions?

Regards,

Ian

Dear Director / Strong 2D opening

Does a strong 2D opening always have to be alerted?
Should a weak 2D opening be alerted?

Dear Director / Lead out of turn
Last post by Luisa McNabb - 15 February, 2024, 03:21 PM
Hello! Declarer South, East leads AH out of turn. Called to table, South does not accept lead and further forbids the lead of a heart. So AH returned to hand, lead to come from West not using UI.
Suddenly East leads again out of turn, AS (they later said they didn't intend to). So a further lead out of turn, immediately West now plays a low S. So both plays on the table...
Disadvantage to Declaring side - West had UI about the AS so of course played a low spade.
Best course of action??

Dear Director / Directors Training
Last post by James Stowe - 15 February, 2024, 02:10 PM
I am the Director at Thornleigh Bridge Club and we have a number of members who would like to undertake a course of training to become Directors.

We have been unable to locate any course or any information on the internet and would ask if you can provide any information about Bridge Director training courses.

Dear Director / Re: Which law applies?
Last post by Matthew McManus - 12 February, 2024, 08:59 AM
If there had been a faced opening lead out of turn, then the player's actions would result in them becoming the dummy. However, if the correct hand had led, declarer simply returns the cards to their hand. The fact that the defenders may now know some of the declarer's cards is authorised information which they are free to use.

The Laws do not make any allowance for mechanical errors in the play of cards - unlike the case of unintended calls during the auction. Law 41A is quite definite that the card placed face down may only be withdrawn in the case of an irregularity by the opponents. So, it appears that even though the player will not gain anything by changing the card, a change is not permitted.

I wouldn't normally impose any penalty - just ask the players to try to be more careful next time. It might be different if a player is a regular infractor and doesn't seem to be making effort to do the right thing.

Declarer is at liberty to show as many of their own cards as they like to the opposition — there are no sanctions or penalty cards for doing so. In this situation Declarer should simply pick up their cards and have the correct Dummy spread their cards in the usual fashion. It is certainly *not* the case that Declarer becomes Dummy.
